Automotive Transmissions

In automotives, transmission refers to the system that converts high engine speeds to slower runs that deliver more power. Cars need transmission because the speed range of the typical internal combustion engine does not match that of the motor and wheels. Transmission reduces the revolutions of the engine so that it offers more power at low speeds, and the motor stays within its limits.

Types of transmission

The main types of car transmission are as follows:

  • Manual: Manual transmission requires you to select the right transmission in different driving situations. You do this by moving a gear selector located next to the driver's seat, and using the clutch to separate the transmission and the engine while the car is stopped.
  • Automatic: Automatic transmission selects the gear ratios for you, so there's no need for a clutch and gear selector. A/T cars usually offer more gear speeds; the more gears you have, the smoother the car runs.
  • Continuous Variable Transmission: CVT is the newest transmission type in the market, offering smoother driving, more power, and better fuel economy. CVT cars keep the engine at peak torque while continuously changing transmission, allowing a virtually unlimited range of engine speed/road speed ratios.

Choosing a transmission

While automatic and CVT have some obvious advantages, some people choose manual transmission for a few key reasons. Manual vehicles offer better control and usually cheaper maintenance, and it's usually easier to move a vehicle in manual mode when it malfunctions. Many claim that automatic and CVT transmission are made for beginners, while seasoned drivers prefer manual.
